The Role of Mentorship and Prizewinning in Scientific Careers

In this talk, I will report our recent work in computational social science and data science. Mentorship is arguably a scientist's most significant collaborative relationship, and scientific prizes brings credibility and prestige to scientists, which are important to a scientific career. By integrating data from the scientific genealogical and performance records of thousands of scientists and scientific prizes worldwide, we focus on understanding how the knowledge linkages among prizes and scientists' propensities for prizewinning and the link between mentorship and protégé success. Our work reveals the relationship among scientists' merit of success, collaboration network, genealogical network,and the propensity of scientists’ future prizewinning. We also found that mentorship is associated with diverse forms of protege success, significantly increasing protégés' chances of producing celebrated research and achieving superstardom. This work can help us to understand the role of mentorship and prizewinning, with strong implications in science development.
主讲人简介：
马一方，南方科技大学统计与数据科学系助理教授，博士生导师。2016年获得北京大学数学系博士学位，2016至2019年在美国西北大学Kellogg商学院从事博士后研究。研究方向为网络科学、数据科学、计算社会科学，已在 Nature，PNAS，Nature Physics, JAMA,Physics Reports 等期刊发表论文。研究成果被纽约时报、华盛顿邮报、福布斯杂志、哈佛商业评论等国际知名媒体报道。
